THIS MESSAGE IS
BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE ANGLICAN CONGREGATION OF ST. JAMES
IN CORRALEJO
SEA SUNDAY
JULY 13th
Living
on beautiful islands we are surrounded by crystal clear seas in
which we enjoy swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving, as well other
exciting water sports.
We are
also aware of the passing ships and ferries making their way to
either Arrecife or Puerto del Rosario. We do not often give a
thought about the seafarers who live on these ships day after day
and who bring essential items, like food and fuel upon which we
depend. Many will have travelled thousands of miles and will be away
from family and friends. Seafarers often live hard and lonely lives
on our behalf to ensure that our daily needs are met. They are often
isolated and forgotten and they work long hours. Some still lose
their lives in shipping accidents and can suffer abuse of
non-payment of wages, and piracy is still a major problem.
The
Mission to Seafarers reaches out to them on behalf of the Church to
offer them spiritual and practical support in some 230 ports around
the world. Mission chaplains and staff visit them to extend a hand
of friendship and help in times of crisis. The seafarers can visit
the Mission Centres to replenish essential items, to receive Holy
Communion and find fellowship in the chapels. They are given access
to telephones and computers so that they can keep in touch with
loved ones thousands of miles away.
The
Missions to Seafarers also hand out Bibles and Christian literature
in many languages and often need financial and prayerful support.
As we
enjoy the sea around our islands, and especially as the summer
approaches let us remember those who work on the sea, especially
many of our own fishermen.
Jesus
chose fishermen as disciples and must have known the importance of
seafarers and the patron saint of seafarers is St Nicholas.
July 13th is Sea Sunday when we can
pray for and remember these hard working people and if you would
like more information you will find it at

Prayer for Seafarers.
Lord God, Creator of land and sea, bless those
who work at sea. Be with them in fair weather and foul, in danger or
distress.
Strengthen them when weary; lift them up when
down, and comfort them when far from their loved ones. In this life
bring them safely to shore, and in the life to come welcome them
into your Kingdom, for Jesus
Christ’s sake. Amen.

If
you want join us in worshipping God, come along to the church of
Nuestra Senora del Carmen on Sunday nights at 6.30pm for a service
in English. For those who say they can't find it, it is near the
harbour. Go through the music square and keep straight on. It is
just past the new huge sports centre, or look at the maps in most of
the free magazines, where you will see it marked.
