A subtropical cyclone hit the Canary Islands this week.
Two day of violent storms affected the islands this week. Many holidaymakers here in Fuerteventura had their holidays spoilt by this unusual weather. The hardest hit was Tenerife where power was lost and many houses have severe storm damage. The government is proposing 8,500€ for emergency aid to those with damage to their homes. Schools were shut in many of the islands as the torrential rain and very strong winds made the conditions hazardous. An earthquake of magnitude “4” has also hit Tenerife and Gran Canaria this week, it was reported that it was too deep to do any damage.
Cheryl Fergison, better known as Heather from BBC soap Eastenders, was seen by ex-pats and holidaymakers booking a camel ride and quad trip in Caleta de Fuste. Her presence triggered a rush to get an autograph and photo. Fergison’s trip came just a few days after the Christmas Eastenders show topped the festive ratings, attracting 11 million viewers. News of her presence spread on the local ex-pat forum, although not all the comments were kind. Some contributors expressed concern that the bulky celebrity might prove too much for the local camels!
Residents in Betancuria are protesting at the new proposed site for their museum. It is to be sited in Puerto de Rossario.
After 25 years of housing their own museum they feel strongly about the proposed move. The final decision has not yet been taken. Betancuria has strong tourist attractions for location and local information. The residents feel this would prove to be a very sad decision if it is taken from them.
The municipality of La Oliva (Fuerteventura) has finally approved its 2020 tourism project.
The next step towards its realization will be the creation of a commercial company that will aim to manage, promote and sell the image of the municipality and to redefine it as a quality tourism environment. This will put La Oliva on the map along side other tourist areas.
Figures show that tourist spending was down 13% in the canaries in2009 compared to 2008.
However in December the average was higher hopefully setting the trend for 2010

Canary Islands - still a top winter holiday destination
Saturday, 16 January 2010
Holiday Hypermarket(Dec 2009)
MANY holidaymakers are looking to book winter holidays this year as they may have missed out on a summer break due to the recession.
One of the age-old popular winter destinations has to be the Canary Islands. This archipelago is of volcanic origin and is located just off the west coast of Africa, yet is a Spanish territory. Its eastern Atlantic location ensures summers are hot and winters are mild and inviting.
The islands comprise Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and the lesser known El Hierro. Each has its own diverse yet interesting landscape, from mountain peaks, sub-tropical flora and giant sand dunes to lush pine forests, endless beaches and cosy coves.
Fuerteventura picks up the trade winds and warm Sahara breeze, making it popular with watersports enthusiasts, in particular wind surfers. It has some of the finest beaches in Europe and the largest sand dunes you are likely to see.
Cheap holidays to the Canary Islands will always remain popular, no matter how many other destinations try to lure winter holidaymakers to their sunny shores.
The three kings paraded in the towns of Fuerteventura on 5th January.
The camels walked the length of the main streets laden with gifts. Corralejo seemed to lack content this year. Instead of the usual floats etc preceding the camels, a single float was used. The procession was soon over, leaving many people wondering, what now?
It seems even the “Three Kings” are on a budget.
Heavy snow in the UK and Ireland has left many holiday makers stranded this week. Easy jet cancelled all flights, many here were unable to return home, with no where to stay. Other travel companies provided accommodation for those stranded. The disruption looks set to continue for another week at least.
Jose Garcia Rey, a 66 year old retired Galician, spent yesterday (Friday) in shops in Puerto del Rosario.
Every Christmas, Coleyca Merchants Association is giving 3,000 € away to traders to streamline business and reward the loyalty of the small traders. Each trader may recieve up to 300€.
The award winning island tourism councillor Agueda Montelongo met with Captain Olav Sovdsnes of the Balmoral Cruise Liner Fred Olson this week. This ship is the biggest of the Fred Olsen fleet and regularly visits the island. The controversy continues about value gained from the significant amount of money spent on entertaining the 1000+ passengers of these weekly cruise liners.
Pájara Municipality in Fuerteventura announced Friday 8th that the Carnival festivities, which will start March 4 will have “The Olympics" as its theme.
Created by designer Ignacio Sanchez de Arocha, entitled "Pajara Carnival Gold Medal", the poster for the carnival in the town is "built around a central character in costume and ornaments that identify with the Olympic rings," explained the local authority.
It states that the work of Sanchez Arocha, 40 years of age and resident in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has been created by a technique of computer aided designs and was chosen among a total of four proposals submitted to the contest.
1,129 rabbits were captured during the annual rabbit control known as the “Saca de conejos” carried out in Costa Calma, Lajares, Betancuria and Tesjuate at the end of this year.
Although the local rabbits form an important part of the island’s ecosystem it is paramount to keep a strict control on the rabbit population so as not to disturb the balance.
The exercise, which is carried out every year to monitor the number of rabbits running the hills of Fuerteventura was supervised by the Cabildo’s Sport and Hunting department, a division of the Island’s Department of the Environment and attracted a fair crowd of onlookers eager to witness how the furry creatures were caught, vaccinated against viral pneumonia and “tagged” with metallic identification plaques in their ears before being released once again into their natural habitat.
This year’s hill walking and excursion programme organised by the island government “ Fuerteventura a golpito” was brought to a close at the beginning of December with the final hike of the year.
Walkers who have been taking part in the programme over the last twelve months set off from Las Playitas at midday on Saturday 29th November reaching Jacomar later that day where they enjoyed a delicious barbecue dinner before spending the night in a series of old houses which had been loaned to the organizers to mark the occasion.
The walkers continued their hike the next day setting off early in the morning and reaching Pozo Negro about three o’clock in the afternoon.
The programme, has attracted an amazing 1,900 participants this year and has involved over 34 different routes over the months, some of which have even had to be repeated because of the number of people wanting to take part.
Hikers have even had the opportunity to travel to other islands as part of “Fuerteventura a golpito”. Four of the routes have been to Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and the spectacular “laurisilva” forest of Garajonay in La Gomera.
Island councillor for Education and Youth Affairs, Claudio Gutierrez, explained that the Cabildo was delighted with the excellent response to the programme this year adding that the organizers would be continuing along the same lines for next year’s programme.
Anyone interested in taking part in “Fuerteventura a golpito” next season should contact 928 86 23 85 for information well in advance to avoid disappointment since the numbers for each excursion are limited.
An unexpected work to rule by air traffic controllers in the Canaries brought disruption to flights over the Christmas period. Many holiday makers were hit by long delays, this coupled with the bad weather in the Uk caused considerable distress, many people loosing several days of their holiday.
Real Madrid star Iker Casillas has spent a few days in Fuerteventura to relax over the festive break but his presence has not gone unnoticed. Named recently by FIFA as the world's best goalkeeper in 2009, Casillas delighted locals and tourists by signing autographs and posing for souvenir photos at a luxury spa hotel. He was visited by Fuerteventura's tourism officer Agueda Montelongo, who gave him a host of local gifts to take back to Madrid with him, including T-shirts bearing the island's logo.
It was nice while it lasted , but yesterday morning the finish of the UD. Fuerteventura was announced. Verdillo presented the relevant letters to the football Delegation of Fuerteventura, attached to the Football Federation of Las Palmas, confirming his resignation from the Third Division Group Canario. From now on there is only the subsidiary and the Youth team. The subsidiary is also in danger of disappearing.
Recently the police arrested an Italian citizen residing in the town of Corralejo as the perpetrator of a robbery. The investigations began when the Civil Guard station in Corralejo became aware of a burglary in bingo facilities located in Baku Entertainment centre.
The theft was perpetrated after violating the safe by using a radial or similar object, subtracting € 10,000 inside. The local security cameras helped to identify the facts that enabled the team officials of the Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil de Corralejo to make the arrest. The detainee was brought before the judicial authority of Puerto del Rosario.
The Starlight Tourism Certification System (Starlight Certification) was presented yesterday, 22 December, in a Press Conference held at UNWTO (World Tourism Organization) Headquarters in Madrid.
It aims at bringing closer two key components of contemporary society: Science and Tourism.
In this framework, the StarLight Certification sets a model for the use of Science both as a resource for tourism and an essential part of sustainable tourism practices. The StarLight Certification indicates that a tourism destination complies with a voluntary standard involving the preservation of nightscapes, including the night sky and the nocturnal bio-systems. Of course it is also concerned with energy conservation and with the use of natural and cultural resources at night time. It is a quality pre-condition for scientific activities in the certified destinations (especiallyAstronomy): in some cases for professional practitioners, but also more importantly, for amateur scientists and students, and for the sensitization of important segments of the general public.
This is the raison-d'ętre of the StarLight Certification. It aims to ensure the quality of tourism experiences involving the nightscapes, the view of stars and the cosmos and the related scientific, cultural and environmental knowledge. This gives tourism a new dimension, aiming to foster its potential to create, disseminate and internalize knowledge and, especially, the very precious scientific knowledge necessary to guide as all in these times of urgent changes.
The presentation of the StarLight Certification was carried out by Francisco Sánchez, Director of the Astrophysics Institute of the Canary Islands, Eduardo Fayos-Solŕ, Executive Secretary of the Education and Science Council, UNWTO-World Tourism Organization, Cipriano Marín, Coordinator of the StarLight Initiative and Antonio Gallardo, Director of the Fuerteventura Unesco Biosphere Reserve.
Tourism governance organizations world-wide with adequate nightscape characteristics and wishing to obtain more information on the StarLight Certification, should address their messages of interest to Mr. Cipriano Marin - Dr. Eduardo Fayos-Solŕ at

What has happened! Heavy rains, storms and very strong winds have lashed the islands. Much local flooding is evident. However Fuerteventura has suffered less than its neighbouring islands where landslides have occurred. The weather is set to improve over the Christmas period.

Puerto hosts the largest nativity scene in the canaries. The work has been continuing since early November. It is situated on barranco del Pilon near the fair ground. Not a single detail is missing from this huge display and representation of Jesus birth. Elements of the canarian way of life are also included. This makes a really good evening out for families to stroll around.
Which? comments on extra charges by budget airlines
Friday, 18 December 2009
Ancillary charges imposed by no frills airlines have come under fire from a consumer watchdog.
Which? Holiday claims checking a bag into the hold and using a credit card could add around 25% onto the advertised price of some tickets.
Ryanair charges £50 extra across all its routes for checking in a hold bag and paying with a credit card; an increase of between eight per cent and 29% on the advertised cost of the fare.
Easyjet consistently had the lowest luggage and card charges of the four airlinesWhich? Holiday studied, ranging from £26 to £38 extra. But in one case this still amounted to a 17% increase on the advertised price.
Which? Holiday head of research Rochelle Turner said:“It’s hard to believe that any airline could justify increasing the ticket price by almost a third just for checking a bag into the hold and paying on a credit card – two services that not too long ago were included in the headline price.
“Airlines argue that they are being fairer to customers who don’t use these services. But, in reality, how many people don’t use a credit or debit card to pay for their flights, or travel without luggage?
“These aren’t extra services. They are part and parcel of taking a flight.”
Easyjet spokesman Andrew McConnell responded by saying: “At easyJet, you only pay for the service you use. “This enables us to offer low-fares to everyone and only those who chose the voluntary extras are charged for those extras. “Handling hold baggage does increase costs to the airline which is why we pass this on to the passengers.
“However, EasyJet has one of the most generous hand baggage policies in the industry, but if passengers still wish to put baggage in the hold, our rates are the lowest.”
The research was based on comparing the prices four no-frills airlines on flights to four different destinations.
It then looked at the charges incurred on these flights for checking a piece of luggage into the hold and for paying with a credit card. Prices were for a three-night break between February 11-16.
The cost of a ticket on a Ryanair flight between East Midlands airport and Malaga increased by 29.1% when a bag was checked into the hold and the ticket was paid for using a credit card (£121.98 to £171.98).
On a flight between East Midlands airport and Faro, the cost of an Easyjet ticket increased by 17.6% when a bag was checked into the hold and the ticket was paid for using a credit card (£121.96 to £147.96).
The Cabildo have said that it is possible that in 2010 the island could become the first canary island to have a thermo solar plant. An agreement has been signed between the Canarian Technological institute and the Cabildo. This is a very different source of power than the solar energy panels we are already aware of. If this goes ahead very significant economical investments will alter Fuerteventura’s development on a long term basis.
The collapse of low-cost airline Globespan has left hundreds of Scottish holidaymakers stranded in the Canaries. The airline went into administration, bringing chaos to Christmas plans for those affected. Over one thousand passengers were due to fly out on the airline in the next few days. Travel experts say that passengers who booked directly on the Globespan website are not covered by ATOL provisions and will not be able to seek a refund or compensation for alternative arrangements back to Scotland.
ABTA urges UK government action after Globespan collapse
Friday, 18 December 2009
ABTA is demanding government action following the failure of Flyglobespan which left thousands of people with flight-only trips stranded abroad and thousands more out of pocket.
The airline was linked to the tour operator Globespan, which sold package holidays. These tour operators are obliged by law to be financially protected and Globespan package holiday customers are being flown home free of charge by the Civil Aviation Authority under the ATOL scheme.
ABTA has repeatedly raised the issue of this ‘double standard’ of financial protection and recommended that airlines be required to offer the same level of financial protection as package tour operators.
This would ensure airline customers would be provided with flights home free of charge or refunds for future bookings if an airline collapsed.
ABTA chief executive Mark Tanzer said: “Once more a bankrupt airline has left customers stranded abroad and out of pocket.
“The Government must take action so that airline customers are no longer treated as second class citizens and have the same level of protection that tour operators have provided to their customers for over 30 years.”
Fuerteventura's notorious FV-2 road claimed another accident victim this week when a 19 year old was killed instantly in a horrific crash.
The 19-year-old died in the Salinas del Carmen (Antigua) area when the car she was travelling in was involved in a collision with another vehicle. Two adults and a teenager were also injured in the crash and were assisted by a doctor who was on holidays on the island and witnessed the tragedy. This latest fatality has triggered fresh calls for improvements to local roads to reduce the spiralling accident rate.
From Saturday the island is on “yellow alert” as heavy rains are forecast. Local flooding is a possibility. The beautiful weather we have experienced is coming to an end for a while it would seem.
With the change of name from Netto to Hiper Dino the tourist mini markets on our main streets should start to reflect the true low prices available to the resident rather than those, somewhat, inflated prices that they used to charge the visitors. Even though the selection of available produse will be limited this is good news for all of us on the island, especialy with Christmas comming soon.
This weekend is a bank holiday in the island ,some shops, and banks, may be closed.
There are so many fiestas and holidays here, the 7th and 8th are fiesta days around Spain.
The neighborhood association Montecasillo in Caleta de Fuste, in the municipality of Antigua, have finally put out for tender the construction of the public square of El Castillo. This is a very important project and it is claimed it will fuel this resort.
Once the public square is completed, located strategically in the center of Caleta de Fuste, there will be a meeting place where recreational activities may be carried out and concerts or other programs of interest can take place. This will increase the appeal not just for tourists but for everyone living in the area.
Accountants PrecewaterhouseCoopers has warned of a potential ‘time bomb’ for struggling travel firms. Their warning comes on the heels of the collapse of Ireland’s biggest operator Budget Travel.
The rate of travel company insolvencies was 13% higher in the first nine months of this year than the same period in 2008. This is despite the collapse of XL last year.
We have been told that it has been confirmed by the president of the Cabildo that a 5 year deal is now signed with Ryanair. Bookings can be made in December with flights commencing next February!!!

At last the new arrivals hall is open. It is MASSIVE! As you walk in, the domestic flights come in there, and the international flights arrive rights down the other end, seems like about half a mile away! It's a lot closer to the buses and taxis, but a long walk to the car park.
There is a cafe in the middle, and 2 large arrivals boards, but not a single clock in the whole place! Lots of seats though, for the long wait to pick people up. which makes a change. There are apparently a lot of conveyor belts as well, and they are saying that the luggage will arrive quicker, we will wait and see on that one!
The last palm tree has been removed from the avenue approach road into the top of Corralejo where the new 51.5 million euro road will arrive to. I do hope that they will be replaced when the work is finished and that the powers that be have a bit of spare cash to resurface the rest of the road down into town particularly past the Cepsa garage which is like a mini switchback ride.
Many of you observant types may have noticed the changing skyline on the North Shore. Some time ago we reported that permission had been granted to erect wind turbines to provide electricity to operate the desalination plant. Well now it is happening! As you can see they are well on the way to completion (this has been really fast for Fuerteventura).
We hope that our roving reporters, the intrepid duo Al & Val from AVM Kitchens will be able to get onto the site and find out some of the technical data, like propeller span, tower heights and electrical output, for us
A new survey from a Spanish website says that drinking alcohol every day cuts the risk of heart disease by more than a third in Men!! Drinking large quantities could be even more beneficial (don’t you just love the Spanish), that is the astonishing conclusion by a top Spanish medical research team. This followed a study involving 15,500 men and 26,000 women over a ten year period. This study was only in Spain where alcohol consumption is high and heart disease is low.
Of course whilst the findings are true other organs may be affected detrimentally. Strangely the alcohol findings do not affect women the same way as their bodies handle it differently to men!!
There is a new centre on Lobos where the skeleton of this whale is being displayed and reconstructed it is six meters long and weighs five tonnes. It was beached around the island in 2005. Lobo is well worth a visit on the glass bottom boat from the harbour. The island is also being developed to provide more nesting places for the Osprey (fish eagles) to nest following the discovery of a pair of the rare birds trying to build their nests.
Local Police in Fuerteventura have arrested three suspected members of a network dedicated to cattle rustling. They were arrested and handed over to judicial authorities, after noting that the six pigs had been stolen from a farm in Casillas de Morales.
The Canary Islands Special Zone has approved the registration and the start of a new airline to be based in Fuerteventura and begin operations in May 2010 with charter flights between the Canary Islands and Europe.
The company, Combi Canary Fly, Inc., is in the process of raising the capital for this venture and that opens the door to entrepreneurship among its shareholders in the canaries.
The company will have its headquarters in the island of Fuerteventura .
Anjoca, the business group, will be the developer of a casino in the area of El Castillo (Antigua). A Fun Run, which will be a 20 km run or 5 times around Tamaragua, has been organised for the 21st of November.
It is in order to raise money for the Cedars children’s orphanage for abandoned babies in South Africa. This is a very good cause as this Orphanage is a non government organisation which means all the money will go directly to them they will be able to spend the money and help grow the orphanage and expand to take on more abandoned children.
There is to be a raffle after the run in, Shooters bar Tamaragua. This is where the race will start and finish and there will be a bbq and disco after the race has finished.
If you would like to run or walk yourself please let me know and I can put you down for this. If you can help in anyway I would be very grateful and anyone who contributes is more than welcome to come up for the free party and BBQ after the Fun Run.
