MAY 12th – 14th

GRAN CANARIA TOUR

All the anxiety of waiting for the Gran Canaria trip burst into life on the morning of 12th May when we all met at Fuerteventura airport for our annual trip to Gran Canaria. Donned in our blue sponsored golf shirts courtesy of the Grapevine we looked the real deal waiting around at the airport for our flight. With a lot of talk from certain individuals about how the were going to murder the course of Salobre and take the title from me after my win last year!! After our long flight to Gran Canaria all of 20 minutes we set of to Salobre golf course for our first day event. We had a blind draw at the airport and there were some interesting pairings for the 1st days play. I was drawn with Phil Richards, Christine Wright and Steve Dimascio. Well I can tell you 2 out of the 4 of us played well on the 1st day and it wasn’t Steve or myself!

Now unfortunately we didn’t manage to get a group photo before we kicked the day off as most were too excited and were off practicing or shooting off to the 1st tee to get started. So here is one at the prize giving on the 3rd day.

The 1st day set about with some average scoring from most being around the 30 point mark, myself included and top 1st day score was achieved by Gordon Gilhooley who set out to take the 2 day win flying in from Scotland for the event!! Gordon was closely followed by 2 other Scots of Jim Shade and Terry Blood and completing the top scorers on day 1 was my wife Aly.

Staying down in Puerto Rico at the Marina Suites we all set about doing our own thing on the 1st night with some deciding to take it easy and most deciding the best course of action to attack the next days comp was to get blind drunk!!! I opted for somewhere in between which I can tell you didn’t work for me so I should have just got blind drunk!!

The second and more important day was about who could catch the leaders of :-

Who were closely followed by:-

Well the second day did close things up quite a lot with everybody trying their best to knock Gordon off the top spot. A lot of banter could be heard across fairways with everyone wanting to know how others were getting on. Albeit some huuuuge drives were played in an attempt to take the coveted title the day was won by 1 point by Phil Richards from a count back for second between Christine and Jim. Mmmm don’t seem to remember anyone offering shots back like I did last year, oh well I’m sure they will it’s probably the alcohol made them forget that bit!!!

We all made it back to our hotel in Puerto Rico for our presentation dinner on the second day and eagerly got stuck straight in to the beers and wine. Our Captain John Burgess made the presentations to the coveted winners with a slight slur in his voice can’t understand why???

Our 3rd day was played at Bandama which entailed an early start with us all having to be up and ready to be picked up by 8am, ouch and after such a hard night partying too!!! Well we made our journey to Bandama with a small detour by the coach driver up a road just about big enough for a car!! We arrived and rushed to the 1st tee only to see 3 ladies tee off and all hit the green and think oh dear hope we can match that, well I can say we didn’t and the scores for the day were quite low.

The course itself is very tree lined and most of us should have put a chainsaw in our golf bags. The course is set at high altitude and we played amongst the low cloud which got us a bit damp. But I feel this sobered some of us up.

We had team game format of all 3 ball groups with the best 2 scores counting, this again was a blind draw and I think I was drawn with the 2 people who were carrying the biggest hangovers so you can tell we never won! One group however who had the combined age of about 200 years! and probably the most experience came through with a total score of 76 was Dennis May, Mike Thurman and Terry Blood and the 3 I feel were the most sober too, so this brings us to a theme here as Derek would say don’t drink and drive (golf that is!!!)

A great time was had by all especially the winners I feel so don’t miss out next year come and join us on this fun packed event that has turned out to be the highlight of most peoples golf for the year.

The individual winner on the day was Billy Seaforth who once again the night before decided to have an early night and was in bed by 11, see it obviously worked this year to play sober…..

A few more pictures of the event for you……

A huuuuge thank you goes out to all the hard work Dave Brown put into arranging this trip. Once again he did us all proud with the arrangements.

Check out our website www.corralejogolf.com to see this years fixtures and please note that due to both courses being busy in winter months, we have limited spaces for players so please contact Dave Brown or Derek in good time (at least 4 days before the comp) to guarantee a place in any of our comps.

Well that’s it from me this time, so if you don’t hear from me here you will hear from me on the Grapevine!!

If you would like to join us for any of our events or you would like to find out more about the society please call Derek Mac on (0034) 646 672 888 or drop an e-mail to corralejogolf@yahoo.com
