Bar Fly
The Tindaya Arms
On
Monday night, Val and Alan from AVM Kitchens took me along to a
new bar in Tindaya. If any of you out there know Tindaya, it
does have a couple of bars already of the Spanish variety.
However, over the last couple of years the village has become a
popular place for those expats wanting to live away from the
bustle of the towns. This was the reason that Bernie and Karen,
a British couple decided to open a pub there.
The
place does have a feeling of an English pub; outside there is a
traditionally looking swinging pub sign and inside the walls
are covered with some of the couple's collections of
interesting paraphernalia.
The
pub sign has a coat of arms on it, designed by Bernie. He
discovered that most places in Spain have their own coat of
arms, but Tindaya doesn't. He picked images that he felt
represented the village; the mountain, the prehistoric foot
carvings that can be found inside the mountain and of course
the ubiquitous goat!
The
collections include international banknotes, antique tools -
some of which would not look amiss in Sadie's bar - and some
great photos of Karen, when she was a bus driver in London.
Bernie is an avid West Ham fan, so their colours are well in
evidence. If you look carefully you'll also find a dole cheque
for 30p!
With
all of this, you would think that this would be a Brit only
zone - but luckily it is not. There were a fair number of
locals there the night we went, who were happily tucking into
the food and drink, plus quizzing us to learn a bit of English.
The bar serves snacks like sandwiches, pizzas, hamburgers and
baked potatoes. They do take aways, which when you live this
far out of town, should prove popular. The bar also has
internet access.
Bernie has lived in the Canary islands for 10
years and in Tindaya for 6 of them. In true landlord style, he
is full of fascinating stories, with which he will keep you
entertained all evening!
The Tindaya Arms can be found by taking the
entrance road to Tindaya nearest La Oliva and then turning left
at Maria's bar. There is also a brothel down this road, so make
sure you don't drive too far!
