On Saturday I went down to Costa Antigua to Unit 5 in the Antigua Bay commercial centre in Nuevo Horizonte to see a new beauty salon that has just opened up there. Like many areas of the island, there is a lot of construction of new complexes going on including some very posh villas with stunning views. There are also a number of new restaurants and bars springing up. All this activity has led to the development of a real community in the area, and as such its a perfect time to open a hairdressers so that people can have a good gossip about their neighbours whilst making themselves beautiful. Wendy, in the centre of the photo above, is the owner of this new locale. She has over 25 years experience in hairdressing and has more recently been working for a local estate agent. However, she wanted to get back to her first love and so has opened the first salon in the area. She clearly wants the shop to be a hub of the community and many of the locals turned up to support her.
Wendy is supported by Sam who is a qualified nail technician who has been beautifying the hands of tourists and locals for 3 years. She used to work in a sun bed shop in the UK, but we obviously don't need one of those here! She will also be doing waxing of various body parts and the plan is to offer more services in the future such as massages. Keely is the junior member of the gang. She is very bravely studying the theoretical side of her craft at a local Spanish college on a day release scheme. The salon is open from 9.30 every day apart from Sunday. On Tuesdays and Fridays they are open until 8.30 to allow people who work out here to come along on their way home. On Fridays you will be offered a glass of wine instead of a cup of tea! Other days they close at 5.30 apart from Saturday when they close at one. In addition to the usual range of hair, beauty and nail treatments, the salon is offering some party packages such as kids nail and hair parties.
