JK Water Filters

Anyone who has a water heater out here will now that they need replacing about every 18 months due to the mains water corroding them. If its doing that to metal, just think what its doing to your insides! The tap water here is technically drinkable but it does contain high levels of chlorine and salt. Its little wonder then that the rubbish and recycling bins are overflowing with plastic water containers.  Add to this the hassle of carrying and storing them and you have a situation that is less than perfect.

Well one company out here has come up with a solution. JK Water Filters (known as JK Pool Cleaning) provides and installs water filters in your home. Previously they were too bulky and expensive for domestic use, but there is now a compact version that tucks itself away in a corner of the cupboard under the sink.

I had one fitted just before Xmas and I haven't looked back. The water tastes good and I have found that I have stopped getting acid stomach attacks - which started when I first came to the island! It is really nice to be able to just go to the sink and pour a glass of water. The tap itself is located to one side of the sink so you can still use the mains water for washing up.

The units cost 231euros (including installation), which may seem a lot but a normal family should get this back in less than 2 years on savings from not having to buy bottled water.

The company is owned by John Kerkhof, a lovely Dutchman who has lived here for two and a half years. He has been in the water treatment business for over 25 years and had his own company in Holland before he came here. His fist experience of the island was when a customer of his phoned him to ask him to come and clean his swimming pool, only to find out that it was the one in his Fuerteventuran property that needed attention! He was flown here and given accommodation for the week as well - which says a lot for his reputation! He then decided that this was the place for him and moved here two months later.

John also has shower filters that fit onto the tap and which soften and clean the water. I have found that the water feels a lot nicer and my skin needs less moisturising.

JK currently have a special offer on where you can get the shower filter for free when you purchase the water filter system. This represents a saving of 65e! On top of that if you mention Fuertenews you will get an additional 6 euros off, bringing the price to 225euros.

So in all, you'll be saving the environment, your health, money, storage space, your energy (no more carrying heavy bottles) and you'll be getting a bargain to boot!
