Sculptures In The Sand

On the beach at Corralejo, yes the little one near the pier and in front of the restaurants, you will find a guy working with the sand, keeping guard over his charges, continually working and reworking his efforts, adding eyes to an elephant, or modesty to a mermaid, and as dusk falls, candles which serve not only to illuminate, but enhance each masterpiece, befitting his pensive nature, and affording admirers of his work a moment for quiet reflection.

His name is Alexander Savechenko, and he has been on our shared planet for 46 summers.

Adding to the cosmopolitan potpourri that is Fuerteventura, Alexander hails from Latvia, first arriving on Fuerteventura in 1999 although he has island hopped around the archipelago since then, and cites having an aunt on the peninsula, as his initial reason for heading west from his native land.

Sculpture has always been his first love, and although effectively now a hobby, it has been a subject of formal study in his past.

So the next time you are out for a stroll along the prom in Corralejo, look out for Alexander and his work, you wont be disappointed.
