Nervous Traveller………….A trip to Texas # 3
Coming toward the end of my stay in the Lone Star State and the
impressions which will remain.
The graciousness of the natives remains un-nerving, but I
struggle on.
Imagine if you will, you are walking from ATM to shop entrance,
a young woman and her infant are heading toward the self same
door, her smile is disarming and alarming! Does she know me? I
don’t think so. Thus I check to see if:
A. I didn’t leave home without trousers
B. I haven’t grown horns.
C. Any of the above
But sister assures me it is known as a friendly place. OK when
I eventually open my mouth to utter communication, the usual
questions follow about where I’m from, always to interested
titters, but the conveyor belt of perpetual politeness has to
be experienced, to be believed.
As for the heat of the last few days, it’s back to
Fuerteventura style clothes, although this is no sun baked
state, more a locale suited to hothouse flowers. The other day,
when walking round the architecturally attractive courthouse in
Fort Worth, (Courthouses I’m told denote a town’s centre) after
30 minutes or so I was in danger of dissolving; and this from
one who normally loves the heat. So be aware.
Still a little time left and JFK Museum is to be visited,
having already been to the Botanic Gardens, which unfortunately
were recovering from storm damage, when another storm hit!
Sister and I actually attempted the JFK the other day but got
lost, or rather the cars navigation system got us lost,
ultimately taking us home via a very Hispanic neighbourhood,
although I thought little of it as of course all the signs were
in my improving second tongue!
One tip to intending travellers, if you are in Texas or I
believe in Louisiana, and you purchase goods, you may be
entitled to approximately seventy percent tax back. It was only
the guy in the shop who informed us or I would not have known
anything about it. Check out their website for more information
at www.TaxFreeTexas.com
don’t miss out on this one!
Incidentally, I believe the UK has a similar system for VAT? If
you ain’t British…
During this last weekend sister and I are going to Carlton, a
suburb of Dallas, to meet the daughter of a Venezuelan friend I
have made on the rock…effectively I am Postman Pat, but it will
be nice to meet her and of course see another part of this
America, it sure is becoming a small world.
And almost finally, dear reader, I suggested that this 3rd
Nervous Traveller would be the last in the current series, not
so. You may have noticed a lack of photos well I am going to
stick them all together for next week when I return to the
rock. Hopefully you will enjoy the skylines as well as my bye
lines.
Have a nice day y’all….
