TWILIGHT SPARKLE

El faro, or the lighthouse to you and I, on the north shore of El Cotillo, may be regarded by day at least, as unremarkable. A red and white striped pole, protruding out of the ground, pointing skyward, and in truth resembling an outsize stick of confectionary.

But every night, I watch its twilight sparkle, standing sentry, never resting, perpetually guarding, forever the brightest diamond amongst a necklace of celestial Spanish jewellery.

Consider if you will, how many wrecks prevented, how many lives saved by the simple yet effective warning of a blinking light shining out from the land, transmitting its message of safety to passing, and therefore, potentially endangered shipping?

Much of this romantic imagery is negated by the fact that the function is now automatic and therefore un-manned like most of its ilk worldwide. However I understand the former keeper’s accommodation is to be converted into a museum of the sea.

But when will that happen? Mañana, I suppose, in the very best El Cotillo tradition.
