My
Trouble With Buoyancy
A day out with Wes of Abyss divers was quite an experience….
especially for someone like me, who is not at his happiest
under the waves, even though expert supervision was with us
every stroke of the way. In contrast, my partner Clare is a
confident scuba diver so I suppose I was being looked after by
both.
The dive site we visited is at El Jublito, yes the place with
the unfinished hotel, which must be a story in itself! But to
the swim, we went a couple of times, but I’m afraid I had to
wimp out on the first two…the after effects of a viral
infection, and to be honest, the first dive they were
completing was a little too adventurous for me…But when I did
pluck up the courage to submerge it certainly was fascinating.
It’s my first time diving in the ocean, as the course Clare and
I took was in Bariloche, Argentina, in a huge fresh water
lake…and I mean huge. And although there was a fair amount of
life there, fresh water prawns and mussels, not to mention the
trout, the sea life in El Jublito was quite simply wonderful.

Too any of you whom go diving, you will know that we must
constantly check on our buddies, but every time I looked
around, there was another amazing shoal of marine life, whether
it was our constant companions, the Dorada, or vast numbers of
tiny little life forms, which looked to me like a tropical
cloud.

Me and the Dorada -
not the kind that comes in a bottle!
There were Stingrays, Octopi, (spelling?) but dear fellow
divers, please be aware of the Urchins. Although I studiously
tried to avoid them, I managed to land on one, and yes, their
spikes do penetrate the dive suit, quite painfully so.

And that was where my trouble with buoyancy interrupted our
swim, if I wasn’t bouncing off the bottom; I was struggling and
quite stuck on the surface, with Wes having to help almost drag
me back down to the depths.
But with luck, I will be able to go down again soon, and maybe
stay down this time!! Thanks to Wes (and Clare) for their
patience as I splashed around with remarkable incompetence,
they must be wondering how I was ever awarded my SSI
certification!
Don’t forget the sun cream!
Talk again soon.
