Waikiki

It is with somewhat trepidation that I review this restaurant solely due to the disasters that occurred on our visit there this week. As it was Roger´s last meal out before returning to Blighty for the last Arsenal match of the season and the trophy giving ceremony, I was quite happy to accept his suggestion of our venue for dinner. It wasn´t until I was browsing through a newspaper and saw a mention of Caesar Salad (of which I am a huge fan) that I talked him into going to Waikiki. As far as I know there are only two venues in Corralejo that serve said dish and this was by far the most superior of the two. (Any other Caesar Salad connoisseurs who know otherwise please let me know at jenofdeniquity@fuertenews.com .)

We had agreed to go for an early informal supper and Roger queried that the Waikiki restaurant in the evening was a bit “posh” for the quick dinner we had planned. I persuaded him that, just because we had always been there in the past for a slap up and serious dinner, we could easily just pop in there for a quickie. When we arrived at the earlier time of 7.45 p.m., it was clear to us that we were not the only ones with a quick, early meal in mind. The wooden annexe of this restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Waikiki beach with a spectacular view to Lobos Island was virtually full. We sat in the slightly more formal interior where the tables are laid up with (my favourite) linen tablecloths and full place settings with a small floral decoration on each table. There are wooden beams on the ceiling, slate tiles on the walls and an abundance of foliage. Most visitors to Corralejo probably visit Waikiki more for its hamburgers and sangria on the beach during the day or for the disco after midnight but we have always had the most enjoyable meals there in the evening (although I have, too, wiled away many a tipsy afternoon on the champagne sangria during the day!).

We both ordered the tried and tested Caeser Salad from a huge selection of 24 starters (as well as the four soups including Grated Onion & Cheese, Creamed Tomato & Oregano and Minestrone). Other starters include Vinegared Leeks & Anchovies and Norwegian Smoked Salmon. Unfortunately, our salads did not meet their usual standard although we had an extremely generous helping of shaved Parmesan as well as a white “boquerone” (which I prefer from the saltier “anchoas”). There was a distinct lack of bacon pieces and the “croutons” were simply the squares of toasted bread you buy in a packet at the supermercado (i.e. very dry and sin ajo). The usual Caesar dressing was very absent and the lettuce was not dressed very well with what dressing there was.

Anyway, onwards and upwards we thought. Maybe there was just a different chef on tonight. Out of the enormous selection of main courses, I chose the Gratinated Mixture of Vegetables (I, yes I, wasn´t terribly hungry after a spectacular paella at lunchtime). My dish fulfilled all my expectations consisting of a fairly large earthenware dish filled with a ratatouille of carrots, runner beans, onions with tomatoes on which was laid a bed of sliced potatoes, courgettes and aubergines. On top of this was a lovely thick helping of melted cheese embedded with asparagus. Yum, yum, I hear all you veggies exclaim! Roger´s choice of main course was the fillet of fish served with garlic and peppers. Roger, as always, asked for his dish “sin ajo” but sadly the peppers were also omitted, although there were three very plump rolled fillets of fish served with Canarian potatoes (Roger normally asks for chips but forgot) and a small side salad. Everything seemed to be on course for a pleasant meal with a bottle of Monopole white wine accompanying our meal (which we always choose here as it´s not served in many restaurants) when Roger discovered a fishbone stuck in his throat. He disappeared to the Gents´ for a while and I requested some water. The waiters suggested that dry bread would dislodge the offending bone but after some time neither the water or bread had managed to move it. Roger is slowly getting more and more angry and his newly reddened face from lunch in the sun is darkening by the minute. Some curses of “every time you choose a bloody restaurant something always goes wrong” were voiced but I had to remind him that we had been to the restaurant many times before and always had extremely good meals. I said we could leave the choice of restaurants on our night off to him in future. Tried and tested food he said he wanted so I will have to do my restaurant reviews from now on during the week with Barfly or any other willing girlie friends. Shame!

I will mention that on other visits to the restaurant we have sampled such dishes as the Beach Club Salad to start, Filet Mignon, Fillet Steak with Mushroom Sauce and an excellent Zarzuela (fish stew). Also to choose is Chicken Fillet Veronica (served with banana, cured ham and barbeque sauce), Pork Chops à la Riojana, Minted Lamb Fillet, Steak Strogonoff, and Pork Ribs with Barbeque Sauce. There are pasta dishes, five sombrero dishes and three fondues.

With Roger´s mood not improving and fishbone still apparent I talked him into sharing a Sorbet of Fruits with Champagne & Vodka for dessert which might soothe his throat. I have had this before and it really is soaked in alcohol (I might as well get pissed now as he´s in such a strop). Other desserts available are Chocolate Mousse with Almonds, Papaya in Fresh Juice & nd Cointreau and Roasted Apples with Calvados.

All in all (and normally) the restaurant provides and excellent ambience and location for a romantic meal of extremely good food. The alioli is excellent by the way.

We (unfortunately) hastily paid our bill and left. Roger even complained that we were 15 minutes for The Sopranos on Canal+. I daren´t even mention that it was Chris´(The Ed) 50th birthday and we were supposed to meet them for drinks – sorry Chris and Jill.
