Penny Lane

Well, after my brief sojourn away from journalism I have returned to the fold and have now finally got round to visiting Penny Lane which opened in Corralejo about 10 months ago – yes, I know, too many restaurants, not enough nights to dine in them!

Penny Lane is located at the end of the street where you can find the Talk of the Town, Golden Days and The Underground, completing a run of Brit bars. However, this bistro has the advantage of providing a very extensive menu of good quality English cuisine (although, before I dig myself into a hole, food is also available in the Talk of the Town). The restaurant is owned by Eileen from Kirby in Liverpool and her daughter, Carla and son Kevan both help her out.

The restaurant is divided into two sections – inside and out (although “out” is still “in” being more of conservatory area. The inside tables are laid with tablecloths creating a slightly more formal atmosphere and the décor is bright, simple and clean.

I have not yet had the opportunity to sample one of their breakfasts but have been assured that they deserve a place in the “Top Breakfasts in Corralejo” list offering Special, Full English, Jumbo and Veggie options.

On my visit this week I was joined by my great friend Jen and her daughters, Danielle and Ashleigh, who are all holidaying here for the third time this year. We took a seat in the interior of the restaurant but while perusing the menu hastily moved outside when a group of 20 or so arrived and distributed themselves at every other table. We decided to place our order before the kitchen was bombarded with work.

However, quickly deciding from the huge choice available wasn't any easy task. You can choose from sandwiches, baguettes and toasties, all week roast dinners (as well as Sunday roast), pizzas and pastas, burgers, grills, steaks – you name it, it was there.

We opted for prawn cocktails (as the paté wasn't available) and garlic bread, followed by a Chicken Kiev for me which was served with chips (nice big fat ones) and a choice of peas or salad), Jen chose a Chilli con Carne and the girls had a very large helping of spaghetti Bolognese and egg and chips. All the food was excellent and served very speedily.

We followed this with ice-cream sundaes and a sticky toffee pudding with cream (it was a tough decision to choose between this and the Golden Syrup pudding – but there were definitely no complaints.) There were so many others things to choose from on the menu including, for example, gammon steak, Cajun chicken breast, steak or cottage pie, chicken curry, giant filled Yorkshire pudding, lasagne, fillet or sirloin steak, pork chops and pasta dishes.

The restaurant had filled up virtually completely while we were dining but there were plenty enough tables and they are sufficiently well spaced so you didn´t feel on top of anyone. Eileen and another waitress looked after us really well and the bill was very reasonable.

While we were dining there were a number of people just drinking at the bar and the atmosphere throughout was very relaxed and friendly.

For some good quality English food at good prices, this restaurant has to be visited.
