CASA MARCOS

Casa Marcos is a traditional Spanish restaurant located in Villaverde, on the la Oliva road just after El Horno. It sits on top of a hill and has wonderful views of the sea and surrounding countryside.

The building is typically rustic with a wealth of small rooms leading off each other decorated with farm instruments and object d'artes. You can also eat outside on the large terrace, and take a break from dining by visiting the viewing platform above the restaurant.

The toilets are probably the most interesting ones on the island, one being located in a small windmill! They also sell a range of terracotta pots and you can visit the donkey at the front of the building - a big hits with kids of all ages.

The menu is presented on a chalk board brought to your table and you can choose from a range of local dishes and either have a range of tapas or a starters and mains.

I went with Al and Val from AVM Kitchens and we decided to get a selection of dishes and share.

To start with we had a mixed salad, which was ample and beautifully presented,

and courgettes - calabazines-  lightly fried, served with honey and goats cheese. This is ismilar to a dish served at El Horno (owned by the same family) but they use aubergines. I prefferred this as it was a touch lighter.

The bread was home made with a touch of caraway seed, which complimented these dishes perfectly.

Next we had chosen a couple of typical Spainsh dishes. Garbanzada is a stew of chick peas, pork, chorizo and ham in a paprika sauce, delicious, and more bread definitely needed to sop up the juices!

Finally a dish of lamb cooked with dried fruits, in this case, figs and prunes. This came served with rice and the sweetness of the fruits went beautifully with the savouriness of the meat.

Normally this would have been enough for me, but we couldn't resist dessert. We chose dried fruits - again!- this time served coated in a mix of dark and white chocolate and a touch of fruit coulis. Simply delicious!

The meal was accompanied by a bottle of house red - in this case a lovely Tempranillo from the Castilla region of Spain.

Prices here aren't cheap - but are good value for money considering the quality of the food. we paid around 20 euros a head.

Casa Marcos is open from 1pm to 11pm every day apart from Sunday. Booking is not required. In the summer they have Cuban music on the terrace
