5TH AVENUE

Corralejo has some excellent restaurants, some of which have to be booked well in advance, well I think that another has just joined the ranks. 5th Avenue is tucked away in a quiet side street, Calle Antonio Hernandez Paez, opposite the Atlantico Centre. When you walk in the first thing that hits you is the decor. Although the name suggests an American theme, this place is warmly decorated with an elegant mix of modern and traditional. I wish they did those wonderful doors as a take away!

About half of the room is taken up with tables for eating and the rest is a seating area with sofas for you to relax on while you choose and wait for your meal. Smoking is not allowed on the eating tables, which keeps the atmosphere very pleasant for diners, whilst not forcing smokers to hang around shiftily on the pavement.

The menu is certainly different from the usual "steak with a choice of three sauces" found around here. There is a wide variety of starters ranging from a classic smoked salmon and avocado salad to something for the more adventurous such as baked goats cheese with sun dried tomatoes and toasted nuts and mushrooms au gratin; cooked in a mustard, garlic herb and cream sauce and topped with grilled parmesan.

There are a wide range of main courses with some really interesting sauces. I really wanted to try the coca cola chicken, which I had heard was excellent, but unfortunately they had run out - well I did get there late! I opted for the blackened salmon with a herb crust. The quality of the fish was excellent and it was cooked to perfection, just melted in my mouth!

If I hadn't been put on a non red meat diet by my doctor I would have been severely tempted by the Lynchberg special, sirloin steak with a Jack Daniel's sauce. Ian, who I was dining with, likes his food plain, so had the fillet steak. Again the quality of the ingredients couldn't be faulted and he was also very impressed with the size - and I thought that didn't matter!

One thing that I often miss eating out here is the vegetables. I adore them and so often you just get potatoes and a small salad garnish. Well again I wasn't disappointed. Not only was there a hefty portion but these were yummy; a mix of carrots, courgettes, cabbage and potatoes all infused with a delicate tomato sauce.

For the vegetarians amongst you, they do have a couple of delicious options for you to choose from and with four of the starters not containing meat, you won't go hungry. I didn't have room for dessert, but I have heard equally good comments from friends who have tried the wonderful tiramisu and the tangy berry mousse.

5th Avenue is the brainchild of Alan and Aneal. Karen manages it and she will help you find your way through the dazzling choices to get a meal you won't forget in a hurry! David is the chef, he comes from Rochdale, would you believe, but has over 10 years experience in French and Italian cuisine. There is also a definite Cajun influence in the dishes he creates.

They are doing a special Valentine's Day menu with cocktails and wine included at only 50.00e per couple. If I wasn't working, I would probably pick up the nearest man and head down there!!

The restaurant is open every day from 6 till late. Reservations can be made on 626 974 919.
