TUESDAY APRIL 1st

CAPTAINS DAY COMPETITION

Well Captains Day comes but once a year and this year it happened to fall on April Fools Day and judging by the way some of us played, me included, and it did bring the foolishness out in a few people as far as their game play was concerned.

Our Captain John Burgess had exerted much effort into ensuring a good day was had by all but unfortunately couldn’t do anything about the wind that had descended on us that day.  Many people were saying that it would be a tough day to even score to their handicap, and they were all right.

Apart from our Captain who chose his players of Vince Price, David Wright and his own son Chris who had come over to see his Dad, all other groups were chosen via a blind draw. I ended up playing with Derek Mac, Dave Brown and Billy Seaforth Jr.

Well our 4 ball started off OK, and considering we were all playing off ¾ handicaps we all netted some points over the first few holes. Albeit we had to struggle to get some of them via trees!!

I even managed to catch a picture of others in trouble!!!

My day unfortunately went completely pear shaped with my infected leg giving me trouble and thus I didn’t score on about 5 consecutive holes and mentally I just gave up and tried to enjoy the last few holes which is where I started to gain a few par’s, I think I should have given up earlier!!!

With a chipping competition and every hole sponsored there were a lot of prizes to be won. We all had 3 attempts at chipping nearest the pin for the prize donated by Castaways with a few people not even reaching the green due to the tight drop zone that Phil Richards had chosen but a much deserved winner was Billy Seaforth Snr.

SOME OF WINNERS

Hole 1

Hole 2 & 3

Hole 4

Hole 5 and 6 were won by Gordon Gilhooley who unfortunately couldn’t make it to the evening presentation dinner, but I bet if he had won the Cup he would have turned up!!!! Bad luck Gordon and I thought you’d have been used to playing in the wind in Scotland, better luck next year…..

Hole 7

Hole 8

Not one person reached the green in two on this windy day so the prize donated by Andy Knapman of Anka pools was raffled off and won by Elsie Blood, sorry Andy you can’t get away with it that easy!!

Hole 9

Hole 10

Hole 11

Hole 12

Hole 13

Hole 14

This was won by the delightful Margot Kenny who also unfortunately could not make it to the evening celebrations, so well done Margot.

Hole 15

Hole 16

This hole was tough to birdie on the day and not one person was lucky enough to get on so this prize has been put up as an extra raffle on our next competition.

Hole 17

Hole 18

Hole 18 was nearest the Captains marker, unfortunately the men could only see one marker as apparently there was a marker for ladies and a marker for men! So all the men aimed at the only marker they could see! So I hear you ask how did Vince win the prize… well he was playing with the Captain and saw where he placed the marker!!!!

Everybody else aimed at the ladies marker and still never beat Christine though oops!!

3rd position of the day went to

2nd place went to

And the overall win and the new holder of the magnificent Captains Cup

The day finished with a fantastic meal and entertainment to include the prize giving at Casa Vieja in Villaverde where good food and much alcohol flowed throughout the evening. The evenings formalities started with a few words from our Captain John Burgess, a great meal and then John heading up the prize giving before Frank Young stepped up to entertain us all. Even on their nights off Derek and Phil couldn’t resist getting up and joining in with Frank though.

All in all a good day was had by all, well for those who can remember it anyway!!

The societies next major outing is the annual Gran Canaria Tour in May where I will be trying to hold on to being champion but if I’m to do that then I think a bit more practice is required before then. We will also be having a Medal competition sponsored by the Grapevine potentially over 2 days and 2 courses but final details are yet to be set.

Here are a couple of pictures to wet your appetite from the new course at Jandia, I’m sure we will get there with the society at some point.

Check out our website www.corralejogolf.com to see this years fixtures and please note that due to both courses being busy in winter months, we have limited spaces for players so please contact Dave Brown or Derek in good time (at least 4 days before the comp) to guarantee a place in any of our comps.

Well that’s it from me this time, so if you don’t hear from me here you will hear from me on the Grapevine!!

If you would like to join us for any of our events or you would like to find out more about the society please call Derek Mac on (0034) 646 672 888 or drop an e-mail to corralejogolf@yahoo.com
