TUESDAY
22nd JANUARY
STABLEFORD COMPETITION
Firstly I am writing this report on behalf of Dave Brown
(Secretary) therefore I assume I am the secretary to the
secretary if there is such a title. Oh the reason I’m writing
this is that Dave has decided to desert us for a few weeks
whilst he is skiing in Canada!! Still it should give the rest
of us a chance to achieve good scores whilst he is away and
give us a head start on the player of the year which Dave
shared last year with Tony Fawcett.
Our second competition of 2008 held at Salinas de Antigua golf
course turned out most of our regular players together with a
few guests. Weather as usual was perfect for a good day’s golf,
however was the golf perfect??
I shared the 3rd tee with our President Derek Mac in a buggy
(well he is over 60!), Dave Wright and Mike Thurman. We all
started quite well with a good par 5 1st hole reaching the
green in 3 and most of us holed out for a par apart from one of
us!! It didn’t last too long though with a few non scoring
holes between us on the 1st nine holes. Mike Thurman was
steadily notching up the points though being 1 under his
handicap at the turn.
Derek was determined to feel like he was at the beach by
spending much of his time in bunkers, although to be fair his
bunker play on the day was exceptional he even surprised
himself at times, not that he would admit to it as he says it
was skill…. This being my first competition since my 3 week
break over Christmas I wanted to make a good start to the years
player of the year score, oh and win my usual whiskey from
Derek, but failed to make any further advances on my score over
the back nine holes. Finishing with only 33 points I was 5
behind Mike Thurman and equalled Derek score. Dave Wright was
just happy to have got his name on the 16th nearest the pin
card.
On returning to the clubhouse we were just all looking forward
to a nice cold beer and some clubhouse snacks believing our
scores would not be in contention for the prizes.

Mike Thurman’s score was good enough after all, not so sure
about his prize of a lantern though! Green fee voucher was in
his pocket just like the win.

Phil Richards finally proposing to our new Captain John
Burgess! In case you’re wondering John did decline although he
was flattered…. See Phil is always the bridesmaid and never the
bride as his second place proved!

Phil Holt won our guest prize on a card play-off from Michael
Brett

Our fine Scotsman Morton Laird with a close shot on the 8th won
him nearest the pin.

A tough pin position on the 16th but Dave Wright put it so
close no one could beat his efforts here.

A bit of Captain/Vice Captain collaboration here I feel…. Just
the one 2 of the day went to Vice Captain Vince Price.
A warm welcome back to our Captain John Burgess from his trip
around the Caribbean, and we’ll see him again after his ski
trip to Europe, how does he find time to play golf with all
these holidays!! It’s a hard life being a golfer on this
Island.
Check out our website www.corralejogolf.com to see this years
fixtures and please note that due to both courses being busy in
winter months, we have limited spaces for players so please
contact Dave Brown (on his return from skiing) or Derek in good
time (at least 4 days before the comp) to guarantee a place in
any of our comps.
Well that’s it from me this time, I may well be writing the
next report too for our competition on 5th February. So if you
don’t hear from me here you will hear from me on the
Grapevine!!
If you would like to join us for any of our events or you would
like to find out more about the society please call Derek Mac
on (0034) 646 672 888 or drop an e-mail to corralejogolf@yahoo.com
Take care
