No records were broken today. No windows
were broken today! But there were a few dreams shattered today,
mostly mine!...
TUESDAY MAY 29TH
It’s not been our highest scoring week
in our fun days or main comp. On our Sunday fun day last week
the winning score was just 33 points at the Fuerteventura Golf
Club! Maybe everyone’s trying to protect their handicap for our
Gran Canaria trip next week! But I don’t think so, it’s been
pretty windy, and even our best players have struggled to beat
it.
This Tuesday’s game was a similar
story. The wind was high and the scores were low, through the
greens of the course we go, and all the lasses said “Oh No!”
Paul Benham’s ripped his trousers! Sorry about that, got side
tracked for a while. No, Paul wasn’t flashing, (for a change),
and he wasn’t performing either, well not to his usual standard
anyway. Having had not a wink of sleep, he did get off to a
good start but you could see him fading as the game went on! I
was in the same four ball as Paul along with 2 guests, a
regular, Brian Lees from Scotland and Mel from Rogues Gallery’s
brother, Kevin, who was staying at the villa I rent out in
Corralejo (Plug, plug!). Incidentally still got the first 2
weeks of August available!
Anyway, though the golf wasn’t great,
the company was fantastic and we had a really nice day. I
finished up with what I thought was a disappointing 31 points,
could have been more if I hadn’t messed up the 1st hole and had
such bad luck on the 18th. I had a great drive off the 18th,
landed smack bang in the middle of the fairway, and managed to
find the only divot there and it was about a foot deep! Well,
it was hiding half the ball anyway, which then led on to
thinning it into the bunker in front of the green on the down
slope with no sand in it, which led to thinning it again to the
other side of the green by 4 manhole covers! I did do a great
shot to get it about 6 feet from the pin, but lipped out on the
putt to scratch the hole. Not that I’m bitter you understand!
Well, these mistakes I made could have made all the difference
as only 4 others scored higher than 31. Aly Tanton got 32, and
3 people were tied for 1st place once again with a score of 33.
John Burgess, Billy Seaforth (junior) and Tony Fawcett were
therefore in a card play-off for the trophies. On a card
play-off we use the highest score on the back 9 to determine
the winner.
Billy
scored 15 on the back 9, Tony scored 16 and our overall champ
was John Burgess with 20 on the back 9. As they all earned 30
points towards our player of the year comp, they all incur a 1
shot docking off their handicaps. They were after all the best
on the day.
Our
best guest of the day was my playing partner, Brian Lees who
won a trophy much to his amazement!
Nearest the pins were won by Jo McKernon on the 4th and vice
captain, much featured John Burgess on the 15th. No one got a 2
in the 2’s comp so it’s a rollover to the next main comp on the
12th June. Lucky sweep winner was Dennis McKernon, they money
goes to money!
As some of you may know, were off on
our annual trip to Gran Canaria on the 4th. We’ll be playing a
2-day comp on Salobre golf course and due to last minute
changes we’ll be playing a 1-day comp at El Cortijo. There were
many last minute changes to our trip, which I shall tell you
about in our next instalment.
Don’t forget our next two events are on
Sunday 10th and Tuesday 12th June at the
Salinas de Antigua Golf Club. Tee times are from
10.00 am. The following 3 events will be at
Fuerteventura Golf Club on the 19th, 24th & 26th of June. If
you would like to join us for these or any other events, or if
you would like any further information about the society,
please call me, Dave Brown on (0034) 620 161360 or drop an
email to

See you soon I hope,
Dave Brown.
