A humdinger of a day we had last Tuesday!
Records smashed yet again, but not with numbers of players, but
partly to do with our 2’s competition .....
TUESDAY 15TH MAY
STABLEFORD COMPETITION
What a day it was for our 10th
Stableford Comp of the year. Strong westerly winds made play a
little tricky. Not a bad turnout either considering we only had
2 guests. I was drawn with Derek Mac (the president), Dud
Tanton (Grapevine Magazine) and guest Graham Rainford. We were
2nd out and Derek had high hopes of having a good round. So
much so that he, Dud & Dennis McKernon had side bets on the
front 9, back 9 and overall. Unfortunately, Derek was to be
disappointed, however nothing changed hands between Dud &
Dennis.
Thankfully, I wasn’t roped into these
goings on, although I would have taken money from Derek too! We
all had pretty good rounds, and I got nearest the pin on the
14th if only for a short while. I did, however, manage to sink
the putt for an all-important birdie 2. It was a rollover from
the previous comp so I was in for at least a share in the 2’s
money. Both me and Dud finished with very respectable 35
points, not bad, but it appears not enough to be in for prizes
or glory.
My 2 was matched by not one, but two
other players. Getting a birdie is always a special thing, and
a 2 always feels good. Jo McKernon is of course a regular
winner in the 2’s comp, but for me it’s a rare occasion. As
good as our birdies were, incredibly Vice-Captain John Burgess
also got a 2, but not on a par 3, but a par 4!
The 11th hole on the new Salinas
course is not an easy hole for what is deemed as the 6th
easiest hole on the course. It’s a par 4, 291 metres (320
yards) dogleg right, with a lake that runs all the way in the
middle from tee to green. If you try to play safe you are still
in danger of going into the water on your 1st, 2nd or even 3rd
shot! You can, if you’re a big hitter, go for the green on your
tee shot, but you have to carry about 200 metres across water
with out of bounds all the way on the right. Basically, it’s an
all or nothing hole for most players, but a very good golf
hole.
John
Burgess was the first to score an eagle on an official society
comp with his 2 on a par 4, but unbelievably he wasn’t the only
one to get an eagle on the day! John Cockroft got an eagle 3 on
the par five 17th. John, a 14 handicapper, has played as a
guest over the last few years, joined as a member this year. We
did have a low handicap guest get an eagle on a fun day on the
old course 17th hole, but never have we had a member get an
eagle on an official day in the 4 years we’ve had the society,
but then we get 2 in one day! It’s a sign that all our golf is
improving, (I hope!) May we have many more!
Other people that shone on this extraordinary day were once
again, Geordie Graham Thomson, who after being cut 3 shots just
a few weeks previous, tied 2nd place with someone else who’s
had their handicap hacked at away at recently, Aly Tanton. On
this occasion, Graham won the trophy after beating Aly on a
card play-off on the back 9. Our winner of the day was also
cut, only last week in fact on observation on a fun day.
Ex-Captain
Dave Cooper was cut from 17 to 15 after winning a fun comp with
43 points, but he still managed to destroy us all, even off his
new 15 handicap by scoring 41 points beating Aly & Grahams who
both had 38 points. Coops is now the proud owner of a 12
handicap and Graham and Aly were also cut 1 shot. In 4th place
with 37 points was Billy Seaforth who was also cut a half a
shot, which brings him down to a respectable 18 handicap. All
these changes are going to make our trip to Gran Canaria in 2
weeks time a very interesting time!
Guest winner on the day was a fella by the name of Graham
Rainford from Doncaster. Graham, who had been frequenting our
presidents’ bar, Rogues Gallery all week seemed to pick up on a
few tips on local knowledge about the course!
Nearest
the pins were won by John Burgess on the long par three 8th
hole and Aly Tanton got nearest on the short par three 14th.
Jo
McKernon swooped the sweepstake money making up for her not so
good day out in the field!
Don’t forget our next event is
Sunday 27th May a Sunday fun day followed by
Tuesday 29th May. These games will be held at the
Fuerteventura golf course, tees from 10am. The following two
games, 12th and 14th May are at the Salinas Golf
Club, tees also from 10am. If you would like to join us for
this or any other events, or if you would like any further
information about the society, please call Dave Brown on

Cheers
