Certainly a unique day for the society, we all met to play at the Fuerteventura Golf Club as scheduled and ended playing the other course, Salinas de Antigua.....

TUESDAY 1ST MAY

STABLEFORD COMPETITION

Due to problems with the greens at the Fuerteventura Golf Club, they closed the back nine holes (without pre-warning us!) so we upped sticks and went next door to play the Salinas de Antigua course. Those that are members at the Salinas course would have had to pay to play the Fuerteventura course, so very sportingly offered to pay for the members of the Fuerteventura club that would have to pay to play the Salinas course, that’s the type of nice people we have in our society.

So within half an hour we’d moved courses, written out new cards sorted out green fees and managed to get the first group out at our normal scheduled first tee time of 10 o’clock! What an efficient bunch we are! Thanks to all for their co-operation on the day.

As it happens I was on the first group out with ex-captain Rob Hughes and an Irish musician entertainer from Lanzarote, Martin. Incidentally, Martin witnessed my first ever par about 4 years ago when we played at the Costa Teguise course in Lanzarote, he hasn’t really seen me play for a couple of years so was quite surprised when I told him I was playing off a 12 handicap! This was the first time Martin had played the new Salinas course and he was suitably impressed, it is in fantastic condition considering how young it is.

Our group being first out had a free run of the course, there was no one in front and as we were a 3 with a buggy, after a hole or two we’d got in front of the group behind. I think we actually went round in about 3 hours. We were all playing some pretty good golf. Rob was hitting it for miles with his driver and I’d forgotten how good Martin was too. Apart from a few missed putts, (short ones at that) I had a pretty good round too and was leader in the clubhouse for a few groups at least with 39 points.

There were 5 people who came 3rd with 35 points, but our winner with 40 points, once again, (he’s only played twice this year and won both!) was Simon Atherfold, better known as Mr Grapevine from his magazine.

He was docked 3 shots, so it’ll be harder for him next time! I was docked 1 shot, I’m now off 11, which makes me one step closer to my goal of being in single figures by the end of the year.

Guest winner on the day was Chris Burgess, John Burgess’s son with 43 points off a 17 handicap (should be 14!). Nearest the pins were won unusually by myself on the 5th and for the 1st time Ken Tull won the prize for nearest the pin on the par three 16th. Nobody managed to get a 2 so it’s a rollover to 15th May &

Bernard Greaves was the lucky winner of the sweepstake for picking the highest scorer, Chris Burgess.

We are now only 4 weeks away from our annual trip to Gran Canaria on 4, 5 and 6th June. Everyone is getting exited. It will consist of a 2-day competition at Salobre Golf Course near Puerto Rico and a 1-day comp at the oldest course in the whole of Spain, Bandama, which is 116 years old. We will be staying 2 nights at the fabulous 4 star Marina Suites over looking the harbour at Puerto Rico and painting the town red at every spare opportunity! I’ll let you know all the goings on when we return.

Don’t forget our next event is Sunday 13th May a Sunday fun day followed by Tuesday 15th May. These games will be held at the new Salinas de Antigua golf course, tees from 10am. The following three games, 22nd, 27 & 29th May are at the Fuerteventura Golf Club, tees from 10am. If you would like to join us for this or any other events, or if you would like any further information about the society, please call Dave Brown on  (0034) 620 161360 or drop me an email to info@corralejogolf.com

Cheers for now,
