Oh no not again! Yes another
record-breaking day for the society! Yes you will be reading a
different report from previous times, yes we’ve had another 2
records broken, yes it was unique day, we hope (said the
men!).....
TUESDAY 3RD APRIL
STABLEFORD COMPETITION
It was a relatively quiet day by recent
standards, 27 players with 5 guests set out on the
Fuerteventura Golf Club from the 10th tee. It will be the last
time we have to tee off from the 10th hole and now the course
is a little quieter, everything flowed very smoothly anyway.
The weather was pretty good, an average wind and plenty of sun.
We had three a 3 ball going out first,
followed by my group, which was the 1st of six 4 ball
consisting of myself, John Burgess, Mike Thurman & Dud Tanton
who will be running the Grapevine magazine for Simon. It’s been
a long time since I’ve played with these folks, I do see Mike
quite regularly at the bar I work in, Talk of the Town where he
often contributes his vocal dexterity to anyone who will
listen! We all got off to a flying start except for John who
was still out of breath after having run to the 10th tee
because he was cutting it fine to be on time! He did catch up
with a fantastic birdie on the difficult 13th hole, a 383-metre
par 4. His round continued to be pretty good after that little
boost, whereas Mike’s took a turn for the worst. He did keep us
entertained with some trick shots though, driving out of bounds
on the 18th into the houses bouncing from terrace to terrace
over fences then back out into play over the next doors’ fence!
His luck continued on the par five 5th hole when his 4th shot
went into the greenside bunker, ricocheted off both edges and
jumped up and landed 7 feet from the pin! Dud had an eventful
5th as well when he bent his 4 iron round a tree, thankfully it
didn’t break but it’s got a bit more lift to it now!
But it turned out that all our efforts were in vain as all 4
women that were playing on the day dominated the top end of the
field. What does this say? Was it a fluke? Are the women
superior? Do their tees positions play a part? Better be
careful what I say! Well, in joint 3rd place with 34 points
were Aly Tanton & Margot Kenny, runner up with 35 points was Jo
McKernon.
The
days’ winner with a whopping 39 points for the 1st time, not
the last we fear, Eva Krivacska.
Thankfully the guest winner on the day was a man, (there were
no women guests!), Scott Powell a 9 handicapper beat off
competition from the other 4 guests. He also picked out Eva in
the sweepstake winning him 50 euro to round off his day.
Nearest
the pins were won by Captain Dennis May on the 7th and Margot
Kenny on the par three 12th.
Another new record for the society was in the 2’s comp. A total
of five 2’s were made by Paul Benham, Dennis May, Tony Fawcett
and to add insult to injury, Margot Kenny got not just one, but
two 2’s! It really was a day for the ladies!
Don’t forget our next events are
Sunday 15th April & Tuesday 20th March.
These games will be held at the new Salinas de Antigua golf
course, tees from 10am. The following three games are,
