“Let the wind blow high let the wind
blow low”, that was the theme of the day for our 6th Stableford
game of the year. Our President, Derek Mac “twigged” onto how
to hit a ball 15 feet in the air and make it stay there.....
TUESDAY 6TH MARCH
STABLEFORD COMPETITION
Although it was very gusty, the sun was
indeed shining and very strong too. It was the type of day
where you get weary towards the end after battling against the
elements. It was also a pretty quiet day relatively speaking,
with just 25 playing, 3 of which were guests. This time last
year we might have called it a good turnout, but as it happened
it did us a favour as we were having to tee off the 10th, which
makes life a little more complicated to keep flow of play when
getting round to the 1st. The good thing about it is that you
get the uphill 17th out the way half way round rather than when
you’re knackered toward the end!
We had three 3 balls going out first,
then my group was the 1st 4 ball consisting of myself,
President Derek Mac, rookie Liz Rooney and a guest Jim Deacon.
Jim played with us last time he was over so he was familiar
with the course. In fact he pretty much showed the rest of us
the best way to get round the course, certainly up until the
last few holes. He scored 18 on the back 9, our first 9 holes
and was only 2 over par for his handicap until he reached the
7th. As I mentioned earlier, the conditions were pretty tiring,
and his wheels fell off over the last few holes, a shame after
such a good round.
It was an interesting round to with
flashes of brilliance from us all. Relative newcomer Liz Rooney
really got her driver going by the 2nd and played well enough
to beat her personal best on the course. Our President Derek
Mac was not so fortunate; it was certainly not his day. Not
that he played that bad, but just didn’t get the breaks. He did
though perform the shot of the day on the par 3 fourth hole. He
tugged his tee shot a little left and had to chip over some
trees to get to the green. I say trees; they were more like
bald evergreens, 15 feet twigs with the odd pine needle on
them. We all watched as he took his shot, he got it up fine,
and we all waited for it to land on the green. We waited for
about 5 seconds, then 10, then we just looked at each other in
amazement, where had it gone?! We looked in both bunkers in
case we’d missed it coming down, then there was only one place
it could be, sure enough, it was wedged in between the thinnest
twigs you could imagine! Before I had chance to get my camera
out, he’d shaken the tree to get it down. I couldn’t even
recreate the scene to show you, I can’t reach 6 feet let alone
15!
My game was ok, had an average 1st 9, and
started to play really well and started to pull it back on the
2nd 9, up until the 8th anyway. I pulled my drive out of
bounds, which makes scoring on that hole unlikely. I came up
just a foot too short on my approach to my last hole, the 9th;
the bunker actually had some sand in it for once, which threw
me and cost me the hole! Never mind, maybe next time, I’m long
overdue a good game!
There were no massively impressive scores on the day, but as I
said conditions were tough. Nobody played to their handicap,
but a few got close. In 3rd place with 33 points was Eva
Krivacska, in 2nd place was Billy Seaforth (junior) with 34.
Our
winner on the day was Margot Kenny with a very respectable 35
points. A win of 36 or under only incurs a 1 shot docking, and
2nd place 0.5.
Guest
winner on the day was my playing partner, Jim Deacon with 29
points off a 15 handicap.
Nearest the pins were won by Peter Flynn
on the 7th and Rob Hughes on the par three 15th.

The
2’s comp was a members rollover & two people managed to get a
2, Jo McKernon on the 12th and Billy junior on the 4th. Liz
Rooney swooped the sweepstake, rounding off her day nicely!
We are currently planning our annual
trip to Gran Canaria on 4, 5 and 6th June. It will consist of 3

is an Open competition, so everyone is welcome, not just
society members, if you would like to join us or find out more
information about this trip, please contact me, Dave Brown on
