There’s been a little gap in the golf
reports over the last few weeks because I’ve been away on the
annual skiing trip. All our antics I believe are going to be
publicised by Alan, so watch out for that report on Fuertenews.
Lots happening with the golf too, new records have been
set.....
TUESDAY FEBRUARY 20TH
I was away for a total of 3 weeks,
whilst I was away a few of the members had some shots docked,
mostly Terry Blood who has come in with some superb scores and
earned him a 3 shot cut on his handicap, also losing shots were
new member Dudley Tanton and veteran Vince Price.
I believe the weather has been pretty
good whilst I was away, certainly not like the day I left, the
heavens’ opened and it threw it down all day, and the next I’m
told! There was nothing wrong with the weather for our second
official day at the new Salinas Golf Course, except maybe it
was blowing a gale, but the sun was shining! Our biggest
turnout yet again! 9 guests accompanied 30 members giving us a
total of 39 players with 2 no-shows. After a long spell away
from golf, past captain Simon Atherfold from the grapevine
magazine joined us once again along with his son Mike. There
were other familiar faces in guest department with Cathy
McGowen, one of the Irish ladies who played with us in
September along with her other half Derek Leahy and Tommy
Hughes, last years captain Rob’s son.
Conditions were tough on the day, I
certainly struggled as did most of our members. Initially we
were worried that the new course was going to be too easy, but
as time goes on it’s proving to be just as tricky as the other
course. This was certainly reflected in the scoring on the day,
with our members at least.
Winning members score was only 36
achieved by past captain Simon Atherfold, it seems the rest has
done him some good!
In 2nd place was another rank out sider,
our very own President Derek Mac made a surprise appearance on
the podium with 34 points after a few years of being in the
background. 5 players tied for 3rd place with 33 points.
We
were put to shame though by our guests. Simons’ son Mike, who
was playing with me came in with an impressive 37 points and
only came 2nd in the guest competition! Winning guest was Derek
Leahy who romped in with 42 points off a 13 handicap, and it
was only his 2nd time playing the course!
Nearest the pins were won by Vince
Price on the par 3 fifth and man of the moment Derek Leahy got
nearest on the 16th.
The 2’s comp was also dominated by the
guests. Once again Derek Leahy makes an appearance for a 2 on
the 16th, and another guest Alex Roberts got a 2 on the 14th.
I
witnessed the all-important putt from the 13th, it must have
been about a 10 foot putt going across the green over a little
brow. Knowing he was close I watched as he made his putt. He
putted, waited, then turned away thinking he’d under hit it,
and then much to his delight, it crept over the brow and rolled
in! The sweep winner was another much featured guest, Mike Atherfold, a tennis coach in the UK deservedly got his days
golf for free, (and also beat his dad!)
There’ll be lots to catch up on for me
over the next few weeks, we’ve got our Captains Cup coming up
on the 20th of March, and I’m finalising the details for our
annual jolly to Gran Canaria this June. Keep an eye out on our
website
www.CorralejoGolf.com for up and coming events and general
info about the society.
Our next two events are on Sunday
4th and Tuesday 6th March at the Fuerteventura
Golf Club. Tee times are from 10.00 am.
The following 3 events will be at Salinas Golf Club on the
13th, 18th & 20th of March. If you would like to join us for
these or any other events, or if you would like any further
information about the society, please call myself on (0034) 620
161360 or drop an email to

See you soon I hope,
Dave Brown.
